Traumatic Brain Injury and HBOT
Each year, 1.7 million people in America experience traumatic brain injury (TBI), it is a contributing factor in one-third of all injury-related deaths in the U.S. and it has become one of the most common combat wounds experienced by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The effects of TBI range in severity from loss of motor skills to spasticity and severe loss of cognitive function.
How it works
Just as with strokes, TBIs cause blood clots, cutting off circulation of blood and oxygen to the brain. Soon after injury, brain cells begin to die off and swell with fluid as the cell walls collapse. The swelling affects surrounding tissues, constricting cells and vessels and causing damage to new areas of the brain. Without treatment, this damaged tissue will spread and cells become dormant, but with HBOT, they may be restored to near or completely normal.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been shown to revive dormant tissues by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels in damaged areas. Fresh blood, oxygen, and nutrients may then be delivered to the damaged and dormant tissues, allowing neurons to reconnect and new cells to grow, even years after the initial injury.
